Det er svært at tro statistikken, når man læser den. Men 1/5 af jordens befolkning lever med sult inde på kroppen. Det er sammenlagt altså omkring 1 millard mennesker. Omtrent 10 millioner mennesker dør årligt af sult el. sultrelateede sygdomme. Det anslås, at blot 8% af disse 10 millioner mennesker dør som følge af egentlige katastrofer -- katastrofer så som jordskælv, oversvømmelser og lignende. Katastrofer, der ofte havner i mediernes søgelyst. Den stille og udmarvede sult står for de resterende 92%!

Langt den største del af de mennesker, der sulter, lever i ulandene -- og deres sag får ofte ikke den store mediebevågenhed. 20 millioner spædbørn fødes årligt med for lav fødselsvægt -- underernærede og dårligt rustet til at klare livet. Og alt dette til trods for, at FN-konventionerne siger, at det er alle landes regeringers pligt at sørge for, at ingen sulter. At sørge for mad til sin befolkning er et krav -- og at kunne spise sig mæt er en menneskeret. På papiret i hvert fald.
